Miaofeng Mountain, in west Beijing's Mentougou District, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the areas surrounding Beijing. About 40 kilometers from the city center, it rises 1,291 meters above sea level, covering an area of 20 square km. It is located in beautiful surroundings provided by grand mountains and lush green woods, and it is particularly well-known for its large acreage of high-quality roses. Of the many ancient temples in the mountain, the Temple of Goddess is the most famous, in which many immortals are enshrined. This made the place an important religious center in the capital during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At that time, a magnificent temple fair was held here every year from the 1st to 18th in April of the Chinese lunar calendar when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathered at its Golden Summit to worship. Even the empress Dowager Cixi worshiped here in a specially paved pilgrimage trail.
Modern day travelers following in the pilgrims’ ancient footsteps can climb the summit along their old trail. .The walk is not that easy, though centuries ago even elderly pilgrims had to finish the grueling trek on their own. Today if travelers could not finish the hike, they can just take a shuttle bus and relax upon arriving at the sacred spot.
